This article reports a clinical analysis of 93 cases of intestinal obstruction in children under age of 15 years, who were treated surgically at the department of surgery. Won Kwang University Hospital from July 1987 to June 1992.
1) The common causes of intestinal obstruction were intussusception (38.7%), CHPS(19.4%), & adhesive ileus(11.8%).
2) The most frequent age group was under 12 months of age(71%), and male to female ratio was 2.1:1.
3) The cardinal symptoms and signs were vomiting (75.3%), hematochezia(25.8%), abdominal pain(22.6%), and abdominal distension(22.6%).
4) The incidence of postoperative complication was 20.4%.
The common complication were wound infection, anal stricture, and pneumonia.
5) The overall mortality rate was 4.3% (4 case) and causes of death were pneumonia and sepsis.
